About the B.E.N.
The Balanced Education Network School-House (the BEN) is a not-for-profit Independent School.
The BEN is currently offering programs for ages 4 to 11, up to grade 6. Class sizes range from 5 to a maximum of 15 children.
The B.E.N. School-House, currently in its 7th year, is committed to respecting and fostering each child’s own natural genius, and nurturing the development of individual talents and strengths. This is done in the following three ways:
Alongside working with the Ontario Curriculum, the BEN curriculum includes the framework from the international ‘Golden Education Template’ (G.E.T) that we have found to be in harmony and in deep accord with the mission and philosophy of The B.E.N.
Our aim at The B.E.N. is to nurture a child’s love of learning and keep “channels of learning” open. Part of our G.E.T. curriculum, which we call “Generating Options” ™, is providing a variety of experiences for the children to learn through. This builds self-confidence and enables a child to grow into a well-rounded individual.
The method of learning is one of immersion in a subject, based on the understanding that for retention and comprehension, longer, slower, more continuous processes are best. Each subject is studied in what is known as a "lump-learning"™ segment of two weeks or longer so that a child can have a full soaking in a territory through as many media as possible. This process creates more depth in a child’s understanding of what is being taught.
The academic learning style is one of experiential, sensory, all-round learning, with application into practical life.

The B.E.N. School-House, currently in its 7th year, is committed to respecting and fostering each child’s own natural genius, and nurturing the development of individual talents and strengths. This is done in the following three ways:
- by combining the development of universal human qualities with the necessary academic learning requirements which we believe to be equally important. The age-specific qualities or Vitamins™ such as Honour, value, and adaptabiliy, for example, are an integral part of The B.E.N. curriculum.
- by providing an intimate, warm and encouraging environment in a neighbourhood house. The ecology is carefully considered with the development and needs of the child in mind.
- by teachers interacting closely with parents. At the BEN School-House, communication with parents is a critical part of our philosophy. We feel that a strong parent-teacher partnership enhances the child’s experience.
