Understanding the Whole Child
At B.E.N. School-House, assessment is about understanding the whole child—not just academic performance, but social-emotional development, character growth, and creative expression. Our approach to assessment reflects our commitment to nurturing each child's unique potential.
Our Assessment Philosophy
We believe assessment should:
- Support and encourage learning, not create anxiety
- Recognize multiple forms of intelligence and expression
- Provide meaningful feedback for growth
- Celebrate progress as much as achievement
- Involve students in their own learning journey
How We Assess
Our teachers use a variety of assessment methods to gain a complete picture of each child's development:
- Observation - Ongoing daily observations of how children engage with learning
- Portfolio collection - Gathering samples of student work over time
- Conversations - Regular discussions with students about their learning
- Project-based assessment - Evaluating understanding through creative projects
- Self-reflection - Teaching children to assess their own progress
Progress Reports
Families receive detailed progress reports that cover:
- Academic progress in core subjects
- Development of the "vitamins" (values and qualities)
- Social and emotional growth
- Creative expression and arts
- Physical development and coordination
- Areas of strength and opportunities for growth
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Regular conferences give families the opportunity to discuss their child's progress in detail with teachers. These conversations are collaborative, focusing on how home and school can work together to support each child's continued growth.
